Cleveland Parkruns Draw Record Summer Crowds to Free Saturday 5Ks

Cleveland launched its third official parkrun course this month at Edgewater Park, giving residents on the West Side a lakefront option that joins existing routes at Rockefeller Park and the Metroparks’ Lakefront Reservation.

The timing aligns with rising demand for no-cost outdoor fitness as local gyms report waitlists and gas prices stay above $3.20 a gallon. City data show park visits up 18 percent from last July, with parkrun events accounting for much of the Saturday morning traffic along the lakefront.

Routes inside city limits

The Edgewater Park course starts at the main parking lot on West 75th Street and follows a flat 5K loop past the beach and the breakwall. Runners meet at 8:45 a.m. for an 9 a.m. start. Rockefeller Park’s event begins near the Cultural Gardens entrance on East 105th Street and runs south along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive before looping back through the gardens. Both locations supply volunteer marshals and timing chips at no charge.

Participation numbers released by the Cleveland Metroparks show the Rockefeller Park event averaged 287 finishers each Saturday in June, up from 241 the same month last year. The newest Edgewater course recorded 134 runners on its first two weekends. Organizers credit the growth to word-of-mouth among neighborhood running clubs in Ohio City and University Circle.

Signing up and showing up

Anyone can register once on the global parkrun website and print a barcode that works at every event. No fee applies, though volunteers ask runners to bring their own water after the finish. New participants are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes early to hear the safety briefing near the start line. The next sessions run July 18 at all three Cleveland locations.
