Named trails suitable for new riders
The Rocky River Reservation path runs 5.2 miles from the nature center parking lot at 24000 Valley Parkway to the Detroit Road bridge, staying entirely on a paved, 10-foot-wide surface with no road crossings. A second option starts at the Edgewater Park boat launch on West 73rd Street and follows the Lake Erie shoreline eastward for 3.8 miles to the Wendy Park pedestrian bridge, passing restrooms at the 1.5-mile mark. Both segments are maintained by Cleveland Metroparks and marked with distance posts every quarter mile.
Bike Cleveland has run its free Saturday Learn-to-Ride clinics at the Edgewater lot since March, supplying helmets and balance bikes for children ages four to eight. The program logged 312 participants through the end of June, with sessions limited to 25 families to keep groups small on the adjacent flat path.
Practical steps for first outings
Rental bikes cost $18 for a full day at the Metroparks Valley Parkway kiosk, which opens at 8 a.m. daily through Labor Day. Riders should arrive before 10 a.m. on weekends to secure child trailers or tag-along bikes. Helmets are required on all park property, and water fountains operate at the two trailheads mentioned above.
Families can combine the Rocky River and Edgewater segments by driving between lots in under 15 minutes, creating a total ride distance of nine miles without repeating scenery. Park staff recommend checking the Metroparks website the night before for any temporary closures due to weather or maintenance.
